When it comes to guardianship, such as in the case of an adult with a mental disability, there are many details you need to be aware of.
Having guardianship over an adult has both pros and cons, all of which need to be considered when dealing with this very important decision.
Advantages of Guardianship
The advantages and benefits of guardianship run deep, which is why so many people move towards making this decision when the time comes.
1. Security. Are you worried that a loved one will be left to make his or her own decisions when you are gone, despite the fact that they are not capable of doing so? With a guardian in place, you never have to concern yourself with this. The guardian can make all the right decisions for this person, while still giving them the freedom they deserve.
2. A strong support system. A person with a mental disability may not be able to make the proper decisions. Without a strong support system, these people often times make choices that put them in a bad position. With a legal guardian in place, this is never a concern because the disabled person always has a trustworthy person on their side.
3. Peace of mind. If nothing else, knowing that a loved one will have a responsible guardian will give you peace of mind. There is nothing better than knowing that this person will be taken care of, regardless of what happens.
Disadvantages of Guardianship
There are disadvantages to consider as well, including the following:
1. Longevity. If the person who is named guardian is not around for the long haul, it can complicate things down the road. You want to appoint somebody who is in good health and young enough to provide the appropriate care and service for a long period of time. There is always the risk that the guardian could become sick or even die, leaving the person they are caring for in a bad spot.
2. A lot of responsibility handed down to one person. When somebody agrees to become a legal guardian, they are taking on a lot of responsibility. They are more or less in charge of this person’s life, making sure that all the right decisions are made. Will you be able to find somebody who is willing to take on this responsibility?
